Watercolor Art Quote - Lifebook Week Three

Hello Friends,

As some of you know I have been taking a really great year long online art class named Lifebook 2015. It is led by an artist named Tamara Leporte and is taught by 25 different artists. This is the third week and I am already looking forward to every Monday for the rest of the year! Even after only three weeks I can say I highly recommend this course..I have learned so much already. This week's lesson was taught by an artist named Joanne Sharpe. Here is a link to her blog Joanne Sharpe. She has classes and a book :) The lesson was about using your own writing on your pages. Joanne says that your handwriting is a part of you, just as much as any aspect of your personality (I have heard this before from scrapbookers) She thinks you should include samples of your writing in your art journals. I agree that makes sense...but do I really want future generations who may have inherited my art journals to see my hen scratching penmanship and lack of ability to spell???? hmmm....I guess that is a part of me :)

Well, I have tried out her lesson method in my smaller journal and now also in the large size I chose for my Lifebook. I still don't know how I will bind this big book at the end of the year...but I have a year to figure it out! Here is my Lifebook page...

I can't in all fairness do a step out of this project because well..that is Joanne's job..but I will show you some things I did differently.

This is a quote I got from Pinterest. The quote for the class was shorter and since I had such a large page I figured a long one was better. I did a lot of fussy measuring and pencil lines...where as Joanne just seems to go with the flow.  Also, the lesson was about coloring the negative space and leaving the letters the white of the paper...but my background was too light for that so I colored them in at the end.

Instead of pan watercolors I used water soluble crayons. In my first attempt at the technique in my smaller journal I used kids Prang watercolor palette...but for this I wanted more colors without having to mix my own. I wish I had the pan of expensive artist grade watercolors the instructor had..but alas...

First I colored the smaller house and of course went for the PURPLE. So that house needed to stay in the cooler tones. Next I went for the warm toned medium sized house. It looks the most like a house from where I live. We have a lot of tile roofs and adobe around here :)

By the time I was ready to color the third house...I was ok I have a cool and a warm so now what? So I went for a complementary color scheme. Yes, pink and green are complementary :)

When I was all done coloring my sky seemed sort of bare...so I made a template out of a scratch piece of paper and sponged on some clouds with blue dye ink. Then I added some white with a Pitt brush pen.

I hope you enjoyed my project :)

  1. Love the quote you chose, Shel. Your neighborhood looks beautiful, one I would find most enjoyable walking. Reminds me of San Francisco.

    1. Thank you Sylvia. I wanted it to be colorful and whimsical in the neighborhood..lol "Sings..its a whimsical day in the neighborhood..a colorful day in the neighborhood" If I tried to paint the houses like this in my actual neighborhood...the association would go nuts!
