Hello Friends and Welcome to a new bloghop!
Each person on the StencilGirl® Creative Team picked a color of the rainbow and made a stencil forward artwork project using only their assigned color. Peg Robinson and I collaborate for StencilGirl and we picked Violet as our color to use for our artworks. Here is my finished piece.
Peg and I each made a 'light' and a 'dark' version of a background, scanned them, and shared them with each other. We printed out the scans and used them all in our pieces.
Once I had my 4 backgrounds printed out using a laser printer, I got started on my artboard piece. I used a metal ruler and tore up my printed papers into strips and squares and collaged them down to a 1/2 thick MDF board covered with gesso.
This made an interesting background full of shades and tints of violet.
I still wanted to add more interest to my piece so next I used the large stencil from StencilClub® 10-2018 To create some black stems and leaves over my background. This stencil looks like borders, but it makes fun and funky flower stems also!
Once my stems were stenciled on, then I isolated one of the background flowers with a black fine tip Posca pen. Next I drew more whimsical flowers on all the other stems.
Now it was time to push the background back a little using a glasze of violet paint and a water brush. I did not want to completely paint out the interesting patterns and shapes...I just wanted to make them less obvious so the flowers would come forward and stand out more.
My finishing of the piece was to add in some shadows and highlights using both paint and pens to the inside of the flowers to make them more dynamic. I also went back over the drawn lines of my flower heads to make the line weights more varied and more interesting.
I hope you have enjoyed reading how my piece was done.

Such a sweet piece of art!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carol :) Who can help but think of flowers in Spring?
DeleteI like your use of the stencil to make the stems. I always enjoy seeing a stencil "twisted" in a way it might not have been intended. TFS
ReplyDeleteThank you Carlotta :) I like to twist things LOL
DeleteI love the idea of this Monchromatic Rainbow blog hop! Also love what you've done here with the Violet (not one of my favorite colors normally, but you've made it exciting!) and what you did with the "stems"! (BTW, the text above says that stencil is from Stencil Club 10/13, but it's actually 10/18, as stated in the video.)
ReplyDeleteThank you Terry :) Ugh..a typo always creeps in! I will fix that.
DeleteNice work, Shel!!! Love the variations of violet.
ReplyDeleteThank you MaryBeth :) I loved the concept of this hop..each of us focusing on a single color. Brillian!
DeleteBeautiful Shel, I love the use of that amazing stencil to make stems and leaves.

ReplyDeleteHehe..I have a really LONG list of 'wants' from StencilGirl. You would think there would be enough..but no LOL
DeleteEven though this is not a color I would typically use, I love how your piece turned out
ReplyDeletePurpleeeeeee is the bessssttttt :)
DeleteLove how you glazed the background back so that the flowers just pop and look dimensional.
ReplyDeleteThank you Peggy :) I have been into glazing lately.
DeleteSharing backgrounds is brilliant! I've been enjoying Saturday morning "Art with Mom" dates with my adult daughter since COVID-19 started keeping us home, and this idea really inspires me. I'm gonna try today! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteHave fun doing digital art collaborations with your daughter!

DeleteWhat an innovative way to get a great background You really did a lot with a monochromatice color scheme.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sharon :) I love collage the most!
DeleteGorgeous colors and flowers!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jean :)
DeleteMy fave part is pushing the background back, the foreground popped, super results!
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda :)
DeleteI never thought to collage on MDF board. I always use WC paper. I will try the board.
ReplyDeleteI also want to say the colors are beautiful. Love the patterns on the collage paper. Making the flower stems from the border stencil does make it fun and funky. I also like the way you glazed the background and add shadows to the flowers. It really makes the flowers POP! Love your art work! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much :) I love MDF because you can just go get it at the home store and have them cut to sizes. Also, for collage, a firm surface is great!
DeleteWhen I see all this, I want to start also. Thanks for all the possibilities you showed.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with it!
DeleteI love the variations in the color. I love the funky flowers!
ReplyDeleteThank you Deb :) In the Spring all I want to draw is flowers LOL
DeleteAmazing how that one coat pushes back the background, yet coordinates all of those background pieces!
ReplyDeleteI agree! Thanks for visiting :)
DeleteI love color and always forget that toning it back just a little bit can make it better. Thanks for reminding me to go back and refine just a little bit. I will be pulling out some stencils today to go back and look at some pieces I consider unfinished.
ReplyDeleteOh, sounds fun! I love to re-do my older pieces when I really feel creative.
Deletecool technique. love to outline/add black & white to make a piece pop!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Donna :)
DeleteLove flowers and the variations of your colors makes them pop out even more!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting Skye :)
DeleteI love the way you took a border stencil and used it for stems. Now I'm looking at many of my stencils with a more creative eye. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bernie :) It is fun to turn stencils around in ways they were not intended. I like my stencils out of the box LOL
DeleteI really enjoyed this project! Love the whimsical flowers and how you used the stencil for the stems. I also like the idea of making your own papers and scanning them for use in your projects, I've always wanted to do that but haven't yet.
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbie :) I really should scan more of them when I get one I adore..but I just tear them up and collage with them without thinking LOL I can always make more right?
DeleteI love stylized flowers, funky, textured stems and the color violet, so your lovely piece is a triple win as far as I'm concerned. You brought out quite a diverse variety of hues, which is a coup when you're making a monochromatic piece. Thank you for talking about the layering process for your piece - that's an area where I want to grow.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting :) I am glad you enjoyed the piece!
DeleteI was intrigued that you cut up your background into squares and rectangles, thought that was neat idea. Been trying to get the hang of background. I love the flowers, thought about looking at seed catalogs so I can make some flower arrangements when I go to do mine some day. I am waiting for gesso to come in the mail.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have some fun art planned :) Thanks for visiting!
DeleteI love all the purple & the flowers pop.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Susie :)
DeleteI love purple and lucky you got violet!!! I love what you did and also loved how you guys collaborated and shared backgrounds to collage with. Gorgeous art piece!
ReplyDeleteThank you Amanda :) Violet is my favorite too!
DeleteBeautiful. I never knew monochromatic could be so nice.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kathy :)
DeleteThis is beautiful. Love the colours!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much :)
