StencilGirl® Creative Team Monochromatic Rainbow Blog Hop

Hello Friends and Welcome to a new bloghop!

Each person on the StencilGirl® Creative Team picked a color of the rainbow and made a stencil forward artwork project using only their assigned color. Peg Robinson and I collaborate for StencilGirl and we picked Violet as our color to use for our artworks. Here is my finished piece.

Peg and I each made a 'light' and a 'dark' version of a background, scanned them, and shared them with each other. We printed out the scans and used them all in our pieces.

Once I had my 4 backgrounds printed out using a laser printer, I got started on my artboard piece. I used a metal ruler and tore up my printed papers into strips and squares and collaged them down to a 1/2 thick MDF board covered with gesso.

This made an interesting background full of shades and tints of violet.

I still wanted to add more interest to my piece so next I used the large stencil from StencilClub® 10-2018 To create some black stems and leaves over my background. This stencil looks like borders, but it makes fun and funky flower stems also!

Once my stems were stenciled on, then I isolated one of the background flowers with a black fine tip Posca pen. Next I drew more whimsical flowers on all the other stems.

Now it was time to push the background back a little using a glasze of violet paint and a water brush. I did not want to completely paint out the interesting patterns and shapes...I just wanted to make them less obvious so the flowers would come forward and stand out more.

My finishing of the piece was to add in some shadows and highlights using both paint and pens to the inside of the flowers to make them more dynamic. I also went back over the drawn lines of my flower heads to make the line weights more varied and more interesting.

I hope you have enjoyed reading how my piece was done.

  2. I like your use of the stencil to make the stems. I always enjoy seeing a stencil "twisted" in a way it might not have been intended. TFS

  3. I love the idea of this Monchromatic Rainbow blog hop! Also love what you've done here with the Violet (not one of my favorite colors normally, but you've made it exciting!) and what you did with the "stems"! (BTW, the text above says that stencil is from Stencil Club 10/13, but it's actually 10/18, as stated in the video.)

I also want to say the colors are beautiful. Love the patterns on the collage paper. Making the flower stems from the border stencil does make it fun and funky. I also like the way you glazed the background and add shadows to the flowers. It really makes the flowers POP! Love your art work! Thanks for sharing!

  43. I love stylized flowers, funky, textured stems and the color violet, so your lovely piece is a triple win as far as I'm concerned. You brought out quite a diverse variety of hues, which is a coup when you're making a monochromatic piece. Thank you for talking about the layering process for your piece - that's an area where I want to grow.
