Whimsical Cat Paper Painting

Hello! I am Shel. Welcome to PaperOcotilloStudio Blog :) I am super new to this so please excuse any silly mistakes I may make.

On this blog I would like to share my lifelong love of all things made with paper. I will show things I have made and sometimes include instructions in case you would like to make them too.

My most favorite projects right now are done with 'paper painting'. A form of collage where the images are constructed using tiny bits of paper, Somewhat like making a mosaic or maybe a bazillion piece puzzle. I LOVE making these when I have a chance to be in my tiny studio.

For my very first blog post I am going to share my most recent paper painting. I was inspired by Word of Inspiration Wednesday over at Kraafters Kommunity. The word last week was 'GIFT'. This one has double giftyness...as it has a quote about gift, and I made it as a Christmas gift for a friend.

The project is done on a 12X12 canvas

I painted my own papers using acrylic paints then torn the paper into tiny pieces. I used gel medium to adhere the pieces to the canvas. The whole canvas is covered including the edges so you don't have to frame it to display it. A couple of tacks in the wall will do.

The quote from Charles Dickens was just printed on the computer using Microsoft Publisher and then cut and adhered over the collage area. I added some purple splatters to the paper. Also I added some shadows using a black watercolor crayon to make them stand out more.

Everything else on the piece is made with torn paper with the exception of some added details on the face. I used white and black gesso and a paintbrush to do the detail of the eyes and whiskers. Sometimes I just can't tear paper that tiny!

I think Mr. Cat has quite an attitude...but then cats do :)

I hope you enjoyed this blog post. Thanks for stopping by!!!
