Mixed Media Birthday Card

Hello :)

Some of you may have noticed I have been missing from the Internet for a few days. At my house the second week of February is pretty crazy. I have close relatives that have birthdays on the 11th, the 14th and the 15th...and then Valentine's Day as well. There is treat making, present making and wrapping, and card making all stuffed into a short period. Also, one of the birthday guys came to visit...and my studio was taken over with a air bed so he would have somewhere to sleep! So needless to say I have been a bit absent. I did look at some people's projects and comment via my iphone when I could:) Today I have a mixed media birthday card to share. In the next few days I will be catching up on commitments and there will most likely be a blog post everyday!

To start out this card I cut a 5" X 7" piece of white cardstock with a shimmer to it. I wanted to do a clear gesso resist. I used a sponge and a flower stencil to add the clear gesso...but my stencil still had some spray residue so it turned the gesso a bit pink. I didn't mind, so I kept going.

Next I used some pink and orange Dylusions sprays on my card. The first set of squirts I added a bit of water after and blotted with a paper towel. It was not vibrant enough for me so I hit it with the sprays again and then dried it with a heat tool. Next I splattered on some diluted white acrylic paint.

I set my background aside and started on the next bit. I used some scraps of scrapbook papers I had laying on my desk. I sponged white acrylic over them through stencils and hit the pink one with a bit of orange Dylusion spray. Then I turned them over and drew petal and leaf shapes and cut them out.

Then I attached these pieces to the background using matte gel medium on the backs applied with a brush.

Now came the fun part...scribbling with my white and black Posca pens. I love doing this. I also added 'Happy Birthday' to my card using first a pencil and then going over and stylising with my black pen.

I put my finished piece on a craft colored card and added a black boarder with my pen as well. Then I added it to my present :) I had also made my wrapping paper out of brown packing paper from a amazon box which I ironed. I spritzed it with pink and orange Dylusions sprays and stamped on some flowers using white pigment ink What is in the package? It is a 7" X 14" canvas of a affirmation feather :)

I hope you enjoyed the step-by-step of my project and that it inspires you to do art of your own!
<3 Shel
