For this month’s StencilGirl® Creative Team project the theme was Stenciled Poetry or Spring Break Party. Peg and I picked stencils that included Spring flowers along with some stencils that had words we could stencil onto our projects.
I was inspired to make a stenciled t-shirt when I found some white tunic style shirts on clearance for one dollar at a local store. I thought it would be fun to make some bright designs on the shirts, combined with stenciled words, as gifts for some friends I thinks of as ‘Sisters in Art’ The Finding your Tribe stencil designed by Carolyn Dube combined with the 6X6 stencil ‘Stay in Your Magic’ stencil from StencilClub® October 2018 designed by Nancy Curry were perfect to convey how I feel about my art friends! The flowers and doodle designs from Kristie Taylors Floral Mandala Lace stencil and Traci Bautista’s Love Collage stencil made a perfect colorful Spring background to put the all the descriptive words over with some black paint.
Before stenciling the shirt, I washed and dried the shirt with NO fabric softeners. Then I ironed some freezer paper onto the inside of the shirt, shiny side down, to protect from any bleed through while stenciling.
Then I blocked off areas of color using painters tape and sponged in light colors of Decoart brand ‘So Soft’ fabric paint.
I used some Pixie Spray stencil tack adhesive on the backs of the stencils to help prevent any of the paint bleeding under the stencils during application.
Once I was done with the first floral stencil, I used parts of the second one to integrate my design and extend the composition in areas.
I used masking tape was to help mask off some parts of the stencils while adding the words to the design.
I think this shirt is a fun and happy design and I plan to make more!
